[Nursing Homes] - Johor Bahru Nursing Home

Updated 20 October 2016

Hello everyone!

This post was written on April 2014 and it has been one of the most visited post. I've also realized that there are many families who are looking for nursing care for their parents or relatives. The below summarized some of the nursing homes which I've personally went to and some of them were recommendations from friends and people whom I've met. For the majority of them, there are both positive and negative feedback received for each home which I think is kind of depending on which aspects we are concerning about and it can be quite subjective as well based on individual experiences. I would suggest you to call up the nursing homes to inquire for more details first, then shortlist a few for home visits before you decide which nursing home to go to.

As I'm located in JB and recently has been travelling to Batu Pahat for work, this post will be focusing more on Johor Bahru and Batu Pahat Nursing Home. I've found a website called "Seniors Aloud" where there are more netizens discussing about nursing homes around Malaysia. You may check out for more information here or check out their homepage.

What should be my concern when looking for the most suitable nursing home?

Services provided by the home and what you need
Depending on your family member's conditions, you should first identify the type of care that you need. For example, if the family member has chronic diseases which require nursing care but with minimal supervision as he is still totally mobile and alert, or if the family member has dementia or Alzheimer's disease which requires high supervision in daily activities, or is it that you are looking for something more towards retirement village instead of nursing home. Knowing what kind of services you need is important as it allows you to have a clear direction while looking for the most suitable nursing home. Just to illustrate further, for example, if patient is on dialysis, you may want to find a nursing home which is near to the haemodialysis centre that you are following up with or one which provide transportation to the haemodialysis centre. If what you need is daily or weekly wound care services only, you may also opt for home care services which are also provided by some of the private hospitals in Johor Bahru (the charges are based on number of visits and distance of your residence from hospital). Some of the nursing home also provide acupuncture and physiotherapy treatment which may be essential for post-stroke patients.

Staff qualifications and staff to patient ratio
The main purpose to send our family members to nursing home is to enable them to receive most appropriate nursing care to aid in recovery or to provide them with a safer and more comfortable environment to stay in (as compared to staying alone at home). Thus, it is important that the staff nurses in nursing homes are qualified nurses and registered with the Malaysia Nursing Board to ensure that appropriate satisfactory nursing care will be provided for the patient. The staff to patient ratio is also important as it ensures that optimum care and attention can be given to the patient.

Nursing home environment and hygiene
A good environment must be conducive for staying and the standard of cleanliness is of utmost important. The bedroom need not be massive but must be spacious enough for individual to carry out their daily activities. You may also check out the outdoor environment and ask if residents are allow to go outdoor and if they have any daily outdoor activities. (**You know how you feels like when you stay indoor 24/7).

 Daily activities schedule
Also check out the daily activities schedule they have for elderly patients. This could be especially helpful for post-stroke patients, Parkinson Disease patients and Alzheimer's Disease patients. It also helps to reduce the chances of getting dementia and keep them occupied during their free time.

Home fee
When asking about charges, make sure you ask about deposit, registration fee, medical check-up fee, monthly home fee, diapers charges, milk feed charges, daily necessities charges, injection charges, glucose monitoring charges, ryles tube changing charges, urinary catheter changing charges and services which you need. Always let the person in charge know what you require and they should be able to provide you with the necessary information. These information may seem overwhelming especially if this is the first time that you are engaging with a nursing home. As long as you provide enough essential information to the nursing home, rest assured that they will be able to provide you with professional advice.

Emergency plan
In addition, remember to ask about their arrangement should there be any medical emergency. Is there an in-house doctor in the nursing home? Which are the nearest hospitals to the home and what is the arrangement from the home during medical emergency.
